Cheesy Hot Dogs and Seasoned Fries [Vegan]

Recipe Vegan Cheesy Hot Dogs and Seasoned Fries

One of the things I love best about being on a vegan diet is that I can occasionally indulge in my craving for comfort food without completely derailing my diet. Your local supermarkets have so many vegan-friendly products to choose from now - from meat-free hot dogs, to soy cheese, breakfast items and dairy-free ice cream products. Now, of course, none of them are calorie-free - and you really do need to watch the fat and salt... but still... you can have the occasional treat without that side-helping of guilt.
;-)

As you can see from the labels above - the "traditional" hot dog (a brand found on the shelf of every grocery store I've ever visited) has 15 grams of fat (5 of those saturated!) versus 4.5 grams of the Tofurky vegan hot dog, not to mention 40 mg of cholesterol versus ZERO! And the best part... my husband loves the taste of the Tofurky dogs!

Shopping / Ingredient List:
Guilt-free Hot Dog feast
*serves two*
Tofurky (or similar brand) Vegan Hot Dogs
Daiya Dairy-free Cheese
1 medium onion
2 jalapenos or 1 bell pepper
Hot Dog Buns (check the ingredients to make sure there's no egg/milk)
2 large potatoes
Salt
Garlic Powder
Paprika
Non-stick spray (canola or olive oil)
Canola or Olive Oil
Mustard

Cheesy Hot Dogs & Seasoned Fries

Pre-heat oven to 475 degrees.
Lightly spray baking sheet with non-stick spray.
Cut potatoes into long french fries (about 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick - skin on)
Place potatoes in single layer on cooking sheet and lightly (very lightly!) spray with non-stick spray.
Sprinkle potatoes with Salt, Garlic Powder, and Paprika to taste. (I don't use very much - you don't want to overwhelm the roasted potato flavor)
Place in oven for 30 minutes

Slice Onion and Pepper into 1/2 inch slices
About 10 minutes before potatoes are done, saute sliced onion and peppers in a frying pan with 1 Tbsp Canola or Olive Oil.
Just before onions and pepper are done (before they start to brown) add two vegan hot dogs to pan and let everything get brown on the outside.
Vegan Hot Dog & Seasoned Fries

Place mustard on buns, then spoon on sauteed vegetables and hot dog. Top with non-dairy cheese (just a little!) Serve with Seasoned Fries.

This meal will satisfy omnivores and vegan alike and best of all - satisfy that craving you've had for "junk" food!

You might also try topping with some of your homemade Vegan Chili

  1. I got to eat this for lunch today. It was really good and I couldn't tell that I wasn't eating a "traditional" hot dog. Especially when you kind of "Chicago Style" that bad boy with the peppers and tomatoes. Oh! hey! Why not some avocados?!
